HRchitect Tech Vendor News: 2014 HireRight Transportation Report Reveals How Companies Recruit, Retain, and Screen Drivers Amid Driver Shortage

June 10, 2014

IRVINE, Calif., May 08, 2014 – The Transportation Spotlight, a subset of the 2014 HireRight Employment Screening Benchmark Report, reveals strong hiring demand as 79 percent of survey respondents report they expect to increase their workforce this year. At the same time, the report shows the increasing demand exacerbates the already severe driver shortage in the transportation industry.

According to Benchmark Report respondents, drivers leave the industry to make more money and spend more time at home, while companies respond by increasing pay, upgrading equipment, and offering incentives and innovative programs to keep their drivers on the road.

“HireRight develops the Transportation Spotlight to provide an industry benchmark so companies can review their efforts in the critical areas of recruitment, screening, hiring, and employee retention, relative to other companies in transportation,” stated Steven Spencer, vice president of transportation, HireRight. “This data is increasingly crucial as the industry continues to find ways to hire and retain quality talent.”

Hiring Outlook for the Long Haul
The American Trucking Association estimates there is a current shortage of about 25,000 drivers and that 96,000 drivers need to be hired each year to keep pace with turnover .

In line with this issue, one area of the survey focuses on why drivers are leaving the industry and how to stop this outflow. Fifty-one percent of respondents said drivers were leaving to make more money, 41 percent said it was to spend more time at home, and 27 percent were seeking better benefits. In addition, the increased pressures on drivers from hours-of-service regulations, electronic logging, and driver Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) scores may also make other sources of income more attractive.

Proactive steps to improve retention show employers are offering bonuses based on productivity and performance, flexible work arrangements, and even opportunities for drivers to become owner/operators.

The Transportation Spotlight also addresses recruiting and shows that the top two recruitment methods are referrals (74 percent) and online job boards (64 percent), followed by print media (57 percent) and job fairs (37 percent). Transportation employers are slow to adopt the use of social media for recruitment, with only 25 percent using it, while the use of smartphones among drivers has increased, representing an important area of potential recruitment to be mined.

When asked about additional driver recruitment methods used, more than one-third (36 percent) stated they offered a signing bonus. This approach is becoming more widespread than in recent years and in some cases is even being offered for recent truck driving school graduates. In addition, 16 percent of respondents reported they customized jobs based on an applicant’s preferred location or lifestyle. Many employers are also recruiting workers through untapped labor pools such as dislocated workers, transitioning military personnel, and veterans.

Screening Uncovers Employment Issues
The single greatest benefit of screening cited by respondents is better quality of hires (70 percent), improved regulatory compliance (57 percent), and more consistent safety and security (55 percent). Eighty-three percent of transportation professionals responding stated screening had uncovered issues that otherwise might not have been found. More than half indicated that between 1-10 percent of their applicants lied or misrepresented themselves on their resumes or applications, while a quarter said between 11-20 percent had done so, and 16 percent reported more than 20 percent had misrepresentations.

The Transportation Spotlight also provides insights on a number of additional topics:

•    Drug and alcohol testing and prescription use policy
•    Employment verification (U.S. form I-9 and E-Verify)
•    Top screening challenges
•    Planned screening improvements

The Transportation Spotlight is available here and the complete 2014 HireRight Employment Screening Benchmark Report is available here.

Transportation Spotlight
The Transportation Spotlight is a subset of data collected from the 2014 HireRight Employment Screening Benchmark Report, an extensive survey of talent management, human resources, and security professionals on topics related to employment screening. The Spotlight asked specific questions of the more than 20 percent of survey respondents that identified themselves as part of the transportation industry.

HRchitect Tech Vendor News: New Study from First Advantage Reveals Employment Screening Trends in Asia Pacific

December 9, 2013

- Report Shows an 11.5% Screening Discrepancy for Candidates in the Asia Pacific Region -

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – December 2, 2013 –First Advantage, a Symphony Technology Group (STG) company and the leading global provider of screening analytics and identity solutions, today announced the release of its latest study, “First Advantage Employment Screening Trends Report: Asia Pacific.”

As more multinational organizations expand their presence in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, they often face challenges, such as continually changing regional legislation surrounding anti-corruption, data privacy and consumer protection. These legislative changes can complicate the screening process and make it difficult for employers to perform proper background checks on their candidates, which can ultimately cost businesses a significant amount of revenue.

To help multinational organizations better understand the screening trends in the APAC market, First Advantage conducted the report: “First Advantage Employment Screening Trends Report: Asia Pacific.” The study reveals key macro and micro trends and provides the insight for organizations to benchmark their current programs against other employers and fine-tune their existing screening practices in the region.

The report is based on data drawn from nearly one million employment verifications and reference checks conducted by First Advantage in APAC from January 2012 through March 2013. The screening results represent a cross-section of the company’s clients located in Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Moreover, the report presents results segmented under five critical discrepancy types (employment, education, financial-related, database and criminal), and examines the discrepancy breakdown by country and by industry.

Key findings from the report include:

·         More than 1 in 10 of all Asia Pacific employees have some form of background discrepancy.

·         Results with a discrepancy in employment history have increased by 13.6 percent year-over-year, constituting close to 50 percent of all discrepancies in Asia Pacific.

·         In general, Asia Pacific employers have increased their use of background screening, with 40.4 percent of all cases subjected to at least six checks in Q1 2013, compared to 38.5 percent last year.

·         Despite the growing use of background checks, 18 percent of all candidates screened were subjected to only one check, indicating that some employers take a very minimal approach to screening.

·         Employers who conduct six background checks or more were nearly nine times more likely to uncover an alert (26 percent discrepancy), compared to those who conducted only one or two checks (3 percent).

·         There has been a growing trend toward “infinity screening,” in which screening programs are extended to include contractors and vendors and to introduce periodic rescreening of existing employees, accounting for a drop in discrepancy rates in certain countries.

·         The APAC region has experienced a significant shift in the types of discrepancies encountered since Q4 2012, with employment verification checks now comprising more than 50 percent of all discrepancies.

“The goal of this report is to help employers in the Asia Pacific region identify the current employment screening trends and challenges common among First Advantage’s clients throughout the region and understand how they can adjust their screening programs accordingly,” said Chin Wei Chong, marketing communications director of First Advantage. “The results of our study show how enhanced screening practices in the region have helped employers find more discrepancies when hiring, enabling them to ensure they onboard and retain the best talent possible.”

HRchitect Tech Vendor News: First Advantage Enhances Resident Screening through Integration with Experian RentBureau®

November 18, 2013

- Solution Integrates Applicant Rental Data in the Screening Process to Help Housing Providers Make Better-informed Decisions -

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – November 11, 2013 – First Advantage, a Symphony Technology Group (STG) company and the leading global provider of screening analytics and identity solutions, today announced details of its collaboration with Experian RentBureau®, the largest rental payment database in the multifamily industry. Through this strategic collaboration, data from Experian RentBureau is linked to First Advantage’s resident screening solution to help housing providers identify residents who may pose the greatest risk of skipping or making late payments.

With nearly one-third of the 300 million residents in the U.S. renting housing, and 64 million U.S. consumers with insufficient or no credit history, it is critical for housing providers to be able to identify individuals with good rental payment history, an indicator for potentially responsible tenants.

As the largest and most widely used credit reporting agency for the multifamily housing industry, Experian RentBureau receives rental payment data daily from a national network of more than 400 property management companies. By integrating this Experian data with First Advantage’s resident screening solutions, property managers will have a thorough, streamlined process to view their applicants’ background information including their positive or negative rental history.

As a result of this enhanced offering, First Advantage clients benefit from receiving rental payment history at the same time as their existing tenant screening data, delivering instant insight into the factors that shape their applicant selection processes. With access to such information, they can recognize habitually late paying residents and identify residents with little or no credit but good rental history. Equipped with this knowledge, housing providers can ensure they rent their properties to individuals most likely to pay on time, while reducing the potential risks of financial losses and additional recoupment expenses.

“The valuable and up-to-date Experian RentBureau rental payment history data provides multifamily housing providers with the additional data necessary to determine which applicants will be the best tenants,” said Brannan Johnston, vice president and managing director, Experian RentBureau. “We are pleased to collaborate with First Advantage and help more housing providers access this crucial insight.”

“Thousands of multifamily housing providers rely on First Advantage to conduct their resident screening processes to ensure they rent to qualified, responsible tenants,” said William Franck, executive vice president, Client Portfolio Management and Customer Service for First Advantage. “Property managers reporting data to Experian RentBureau and leveraging the First Advantage resident screening solutions will now recognize the full benefit of rental payment data. By teaming up with Experian RentBureau, our clients benefit from the additional insight into their applicants’ payment history, giving them a detailed view to help them make well-informed decisions.”
