Lumesse, a global leader in integrated talent management solutions, today announced that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has implemented Lumesse TalentLink as the core technology platform supporting the shared HR-service team building its Greater China talent acquisition strategy.
The GSK talent acquisition team has a strategic goal to transform its recruitment processes to enable it to build a robust talent pipeline. Current market growth has driven over 2,000 hires for GSK across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjing and Hong Kong within the last year.
As part of the GSK global recruitment solution implementation, the Lumesse China team took just three months in early 2011 to implement Lumesse TalentLink solutions locally in a project that included system tests and user training. Lumesse TalentLink now supports 18 recruiters, more than 10 HR business partners and 10 agencies across the Greater China region.
“To allow us to manage the China market, the evolution of the HR team into a shared-service unit pairs up recruiters with business managers as close partners,” noted Blake Cai, recruitment & HRIS manager, HR Shared Services, GSK Greater China. “Meanwhile, we are conscious that this model has to be balanced with stronger centralization across cities to drive efficiency.”
Since staff referral is a very important hiring channel in the pharmaceutical industry, the GSK team makes creative use of the Lumesse TalentLink platform to publicize job advertisements among existing staff. The platform is also connected to the two largest job-boards in China, 51jobs and Zhaopin to effectively manage job applications through this channel. The scalability and flexibility of the Lumesse platform has also enabled GSK to offer a better candidate experience in the application process for the large number of applications it receives. For example, as a famous consumer brand in pharmaceuticals, the capability to improve rejection handling for GSK recruiters was a key factor in choosing Lumesse TalentLink.
“High growth markets like China are driving global brands to rethink talent strategies,” said Lumesse CEO Matthew Parker. “The need to combine both high-volume and specialists skills when recruiting puts huge demands on managers and HR professionals. Operational efficiency and the ability to tap into multiple sourcing channels are key benefits that Lumesse TalentLink can deliver.”
“Our recruiters have always been professional and productive, but they needed to change as our business expands rapidly,” added Cai. “What worked in the past with isolated spreadsheets will now be replaced with a single, regionally shared talent acquisition platform that provides better information transparency and standardized workflows. We believe that the better data integrity, accuracy and analytical reports that have come after the change have genuinely improved the shared-service team’s working lead time, cost and service delivery and made it a better partner with the GSK business.”
GSK chose Lumesse among many local and global solution vendors based on its better local service and proven expertise in Greater China. Product functionality, operational speed and project cost-effectiveness were prime considerations as well.
“The China market is filled with opportunities and challenges,” noted Erik Schmit, managing director of APAC Region, Lumesse. “The commitment of Lumesse in the China market with continuous investment in its local services team and infrastructure differentiates us from the rest. This was is a key reason for GSK extending its cooperation with us outside of its headquarters region.”

- Survey shows age is a major factor in workplace happiness – mid-career workers least happy
- Gender differences in pay rises, training, work satisfaction still common in some countries
- Training, performance reviews, recognition and workplace trust remain major employee issues
HRchitect includes StepStone in our list of top Talent Acquisition Systems and Top Talent Management Systems vendors that businesses should consider. If you are looking for a new Talent Management System, or any HR system, don’t rely solely on “recommendations” or published reports. Do yourself a huge favor and talk to HRchitect first. Lumesse – the new name from today for StepStone Solutions – has revealed the first findings of ‘Inspiring Talent’ – a detailed, independent survey* of employee attitudes to their jobs and employers. Sourced from almost 4000 employees in larger companies in 14 countries worldwide, including the US, UK, Germany and China, the survey reveals the different attitudes to work and employers among older and younger workers, men and women, and different regions. The survey found, for example, that the oldest and youngest workers were the happiest, with employees starting work and nearing retirement consistently reporting higher levels of workplace satisfaction than their stressed-out, mid-career colleagues. Differences in pay rises, training opportunities and job satisfaction between men and women were still common, suggesting that not all employers have made good progress in equalising the workplace experience between the sexes in recent years. Other key findings include:
US employees are most likely to describe their companies as very successful; Swedish the least.
- French employees are the most loyal, while Scandinavians are the happiest. UK employees rank second last for job satisfaction.
- Chinese staff are almost three times as likely to report large pay rises as the global average.
- Less than a quarter of employees always feel trusted to make important decisions.
- More men (10%) than women (8%) report a large pay increase (over 20%) since 2008
- Almost 40% of older workers (56 – 60) believe they will be recognised and rewarded if they work harder or take extra responsibility; only 19% of Gen Y (18 – 25) agree.
StepStone Solutions, one of the world’s leading talent management companies, also today announces the rebranding of the company as ‘Lumesse.’ With rapid growth in its ‘Software-as-Service’ solutions over recent periods, and an active user base well in excess of a million people in 70 countries, the new brand is the first step in making Lumesse an increasingly high-profile, global player in the fast-growth talent management sector.
Lumesse is positioned in the ‘Leaders’ quadrant in Gartner, Inc’s 2011 “Magic Quadrant for Employee Performance Management Software. Leaders have strong product functionality and, often, provide superior customer experience. In addition, these vendors have strong direct sales and/or channel sales capabilities. Leading vendors also have strong or emerging multinational solutions (with corresponding service and support).
“As Lumesse we are building a new kind of company, a high technology talent management business that doesn’t talk about technology, but about people and their potential,” said Lumesse CEO, Matthew Parker. “Our rebrand is a watershed in our company development, but it’s much more than a change of name. We’re building a global talent management business that acts like a local company – a company that can help both employers and employees have better jobs and better results. And our ‘Inspiring Talent’ survey shows that many companies have a long way to go in getting the best from their people and in giving them careers that really inspire them.”
The Lumesse ‘Inspiring Talent’ survey shows that issues remain in the way many employers use the talents of their staff. Training, performance reviews and workplace trust remain an issue with only half of employees reporting that they have an effective appraisal process and only one third saying that good training is regularly available. Less than one in five employees said they would always be rewarded for taking extra responsibility or working harder.
Regionally, the survey found wide variations in attitudes across the 14 surveyed countries. US staff were most upbeat about their companies’ success. The happiest employees were in the Nordic countries, with over 80% saying they enjoyed going to work; the least happy in Hong Kong, with only half claiming to be happy. However, the UK also did not fare well, being second last in the happiness stakes. When it comes to loyalty 57% of French employees planned to stay with their employers ‘forever’ – at the other end of the loyalty scale the UK and Netherlands (24%) were beaten only by Singapore, in last place for long-term loyalty at just 17%.
The full report, Inspiring Talent 2011, will be available from Lumesse later in June 2011.
Formed in 2003, StepStone Solutions separated from its parent company in a management buyout backed by HgCapital in April 2010. With over 1,700 customers, including major brands such as Bank of China International, Deutsche Telekom, Heineken, Merck, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Virgin Atlantic, and employees in 17 countries, Lumesse is a high-growth global success story in the talent management market. Lumesse provides ‘Software-as-a-Service’ solutions in both talent acquisition and talent management, with well over a million active users of its technology, served from global data centres.
“Many companies seem to be doing a great job in providing inspiring, supportive workplaces for their people,” adds Matthew Parker, Lumesse CEO. “But the report card for many others has to be ‘could do better,’ especially in areas like training, career development, performance appraisals and job recognition. As Lumesse we’ve set out a clear statement of our company values, based on what our people said they wanted the company to be, with a strong emphasis on our ability to provide a working environment and culture that inspires people – in Lumesse and in our customers – to do better and have more fun.”
“The talent management software market continues to grow in size and importance, yet it appears crowded, noisy and undifferentiated to buyers,” said Josh Bersin, President and CEO of Bersin & Associates, a leading analyst firm in human resources and talent management. “Lumesse’s focus on creating a global brand which focuses on the ‘people benefits’ of talent management gives the company a clear and differentiated vision which goes far beyond the features and capabilities of software itself.”
“Our rebrand to Lumesse is the end of a long project and the start of a new chapter in our history,” said Michelle Martin, Global Head of Marketing. “The brand reflects the kind of company our people said they want to work for – vibrant, human, fun but focused, global in scale but local in execution and, above all, a business that generates fantastic outcomes for its customers and inspiring careers for their people.”

Synygy Inc., the largest and most experienced provider of sales compensation management and other sales performance management (SPM) software and services, today announced a partnership with StepStone Solutions, a global provider of talent management solutions, to co-market SPM solutions focused on automation of sales force staffing processes.
Sales force staffing processes include the management of sales hiring, on-boarding, coaching, skills and competency assessment, training and certification, and other talent management functions. The combined solutions for managing sales compensation, sales performance, and sales talent that are provided by Synygy and StepStone Solutions help to drive sales force effectiveness and productivity.
“This agreement is the latest outcome of Synygy’s multi-faceted partnering strategy,” said Mark A. Stiffler, Synygy’s president and CEO. “StepStone Solutions is a leader in web-based talent acquisition and talent management solutions. Our joint solutions further expand our offerings the area of the sales staffing process component of Synygy’s set of a dozen SPM focus areas.”
With complementary geographic and subject matter footprints, the two organizations intend to leverage one another’s strengths to present comprehensive solutions to their clients.
“Companies are taking a holistic approach to their pay-for-performance initiatives,” said StepStone Solutions CEO, Matthew Parker. “Our partnership with Synygy, a world-recognized authority on sales compensation and sales performance management, positions us to address the entire scope of sales operations needs of our client base.”

This high-profile project, known as people@Puma, proves once again that StepStone can deliver real business improvement in the highly complex area of global talent management:

StepStone continues to deliver positive results in a very challenging market – 12% EBITDA margin and €2.5m cash from operations in Q2 2009
HRchitect featured StepStone in our May 2008 release of The Suite Life of Integrated Talent Management and also includes them in our list of top Talent Management Systems vendors that businesses should consider. If you are looking for a new Talent Management System, or any HR system, talk to HRchitect first. We have unparalleled knowledge of the HR and Talent Management vendor community and can save you time and money in selection and implementation.
Highlights
- Revenue of €24.7m
- Adjusted EBITDA of €2.9m; 12% margin
- €2.5m cash generated from operations
- Recurring revenues from talent management products up by 25% year on year
- Online delivering 27% EBITDA margin whilst market still declines for jobs
- Continued focus on cost management; Quarterly operating cost base down €4.7m (18%) since Q4 08
- 55 new talent management customers contracted; customer churn remains stable at under 1%
Results for the quarter
StepStone has delivered another profitable quarter despite unprecedented challenging economic conditions in all markets. Total revenue in Q2 2009 was €24.7m. The company delivered Q2 2009 adjusted EBITDA of €2.9m and generated cash from operations of €2.5m.
Demand for Online recruitment products, which advertise current job vacancies, has fallen sharply in the last two quarters as the vast majority of employers continue to either freeze or reduce headcount. The volume of business contracted has decreased by close to 50% in six months.
The rate of decline in demand in the second quarter of 2009 was considerably less than that in the first quarter, indicating that the bottom may be near. However, there are no reliable indicators supporting a sustainable upturn in demand for online recruitment products in the second half of 2009. The company is assuming that the challenging market conditions for Online products will continue through to the end of 2009 and is managing Online costs and profitability accordingly.
Demand for talent management products continued, albeit at a slower pace, as customers sought to manage their cost bases more effectively and efficiently. The revenue base continues to move towards highly predictable recurring revenue in the form of monthly fees and away from more volatile one-time license fees and professional services. StepStone’s ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) model is attractive to new customers, providing a low entry cost to an enterprise-level solution, as well as predictable costs geared to the delivered service.
A total of 55 new customers subscribed for StepStone’s talent management products in Q2 2009 and a record 101 existing customers extended their usage. Cancellations during the quarter remained minimal at under 1% by value.
Customers are increasingly choosing inherently more predictable subscriptions in preference to licences, with revenue from licences now only 7% of quarterly revenue compared to close to 10% a year ago. The recurring revenue base from Solutions customers increased 25% between Q2 2008 and Q2 2009. Recurring revenue represented 58% of Q2 2009 Solutions revenue, up from 48% a year ago.
Retention and market share growth during this unprecedented economic slowdown remains a strong focus for the company. StepStone continues to build its commercial capabilities with a number of key new hires joining the company in the last quarter.
Notable was the encouraging customer response to the marketing initiatives launched in the quarter. These have included a series of global customer seminars in 18 locations and the launch of a new web based ‘talent strategy assessment’ tool.
Results for professional services, primarily targeted at implementation of talent management products, remain under pressure. Lower volumes of new customers compared to a year ago together with declining day rates has resulted in revenue from professional services decreasing 17% from that in Q2 2008.
The company has continued to focus on its cost base. Operating costs for Q2 2009, which included all related redundancy costs, were €21.8m. Close to €5m has been removed from the company’s operating cost base over the last eight months and further reductions are planned over the remainder of 2009.
During the quarter StepStone settled, in cash, the remaining deferred consideration of €2.4m due in respect of the acquisitions of LVE and Sourcea. As a result the company has no further cash based obligations for past acquisitions. The only remaining deferred consideration is €3m in respect of ExecuTRACK which will be settled by the issue of 1.8 million new shares at the end of 2009.
The Company also took the opportunity to repurchase €1.2m of its Loan Notes 2010 reducing the balance in the market to just €3.2m.
The company ended Q2 2009 with €30.7m of cash and only €12.6m of interest bearing debt. In addition the company has access to over €20.0m of undrawn banking facilities, subject to covenants.

StepStone (OSE:STP)(LSE:STPS), Europe’s leading provider of human capital management solutions, today announces that MTV Networks, the world’s most watched television network, is now using StepStone’s e-recruitment solution to drive online recruitment across its business, reduce time to hire and cut recruitment costs. MTV joins other media businesses, including Channel 4, RTL and Bertelsmann, that have implemented StepStone solutions to streamline their recruitment processes and attract the most talented candidates.
“StepStone’s solution will cover both the MTV and Nickelodeon brands,” explains Kelvin Warburton, HR Manager, MTV Networks. “We want and need to hire the most talented people in every role, to keep MTV as the best, most successful network TV provider. We chose StepStone because of its track record in promoting employer brands through offering a great candidate experience, which is a must for a brand of our global stature, and for its ability to reduce time and cost to hire.”
Home to comedy, music and children’s TV channels, such as MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, MTV Networks has 122 channels and 94 websites, attracting audiences of more than 440 million households in 167 countries. The StepStone implementation covers MTV Networks UK & Ireland, MTV Networks International and MTV Networks Emerging Markets, enabling candidates to apply for positions through its online careers site, www.mtvcareers.co.uk.
Like many companies, prior to implementing the StepStone solution, MTV had a mainly paper-based recruitment process. The implementation of StepStone’s platform has streamlined the process from initial application through to starting and beyond, and reduced the administrative burden placed on the team members. As part of the implementation, StepStone supported the network’s plans to introduce an Intranet site highlighting internal job opportunities to improve the ratio of internal to external hires and help retain MTV’s top talent.
“This was a very well run project by StepStone,” adds Brian Coghlan, the Project Manager at MTV. “Thanks to a lot of dedication by all involved, it was delivered on time, to budget and to requirements – what more could we ask for?”
Matthew Parker, Group Managing Director of StepStone Solutions, comments: “In a tough market, finding and keeping the best people just gets more and more important. Smart businesses are developing their employer brands to attract and engage with great candidates. Companies like MTV understand the wider impact of brand perception in the recruitment process, in addition to the significant cost and time savings e-recruitment solutions can help achieve.”

StepStone (OSE:STP)(LSE:STPS), the leading provider of human capital management solutions, today announced a series of global seminars spanning 21 cities designed to highlight how it’s now HR’s time to shine. The roadshow will demonstrate how HR departments can take advantage of the slowdown and show their true value by helping their organisation win what StepStone has identified as the Cold War for Talent. A global survey of the world’s largest employers, published recently by StepStone, showed that despite widespread redundancies, many organisations are still finding it difficult to recruit and retain top talent.
StepStone’s seminars, which will take place during May and June visiting cities in the UK, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa and North America, will discuss how HR can increase its positive impact on the business by retaining its greatest talent assets, assess and develop employee skills to optimise internal resources and how to minimise the effects on workforce motivation if redundancies prove unavoidable.
The seminar will allow attendees to learn from other organsiations, including Mouchel about the talent management challenges they have faced as well as industry experts, such as PA Consulting who will be sharing their best practice thinking on workforce planning and analytics. The interactive sessions provide a unique opportunity for HR executives to evaluate their Talent Strategy with StepStone’s assessment tool, share experiences, network with other talent management professionals and focus on a specific topic of choice in a 1:1 session with a StepStone Best Practice Consultant.
“Our events come at a crucial time for the HR industry,” explains Jim Cassidy, Chief Marketing Officer. “Our recent global research identified the slowdown as an opportunity for HR to shine. Under the guidance of HR, a company can extract huge value from its talent strategy, drive cost savings and optimise its workforce. HR should hold the responsibility of managing internal and external talent, helping the business reposition itself for success once recovery begins.”
