Saba (NASDAQ: SABA), the premier People Cloud provider, today reported financial results for its second quarter ended November 30, 2011.

“With cloud billings growing over 80% for the second straight quarter, we believe we have emerged as one of the fastest growing public cloud businesses,” said Bobby Yazdani, Founder and CEO, Saba. “We signed twice as many one million dollar deals this quarter as we did last quarter, and in the second quarter alone, we added over one million subscribers to the Saba People Cloud.”

Results for the Second Quarter Fiscal Year 2012

Revenues: Total GAAP revenues were $30.4 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012, up 4% from $29.2 million in the same quarter last year. Total non-GAAP revenues in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012 were $30.6 million, up 5%, compared to $29.2 million in the same quarter last year. On a GAAP basis, cloud revenues in the second quarter increased 64% to $9.7 million from $5.9 million in the same quarter of the prior year. Non-GAAP revenues reflect the impact to revenue of fair value adjustments to deferred revenue due to acquisitions.

Deferred Revenue: Total deferred revenue was $47.3 million at the end of the second quarter of fiscal year 2012, up 33% year-over-year. Deferred revenue from cloud subscriptions grew 113% year-over-year to $23.8 million at the end of the second quarter.

Earnings (Loss) per Share: GAAP loss per share was $0.16 in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012 compared to a loss per share of $0.03 in the same period last year. Non-GAAP loss per share was $0.10 in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012 compared to earnings per share of $0.02 in the second quarter of the last fiscal year.

Our non-GAAP results are calculated by adjusting GAAP results for the impact of certain items including (i) non-cash amortization of intangibles, (ii) non-cash share-based compensation expenses, (iii) non-operating reorganization costs, (iv) the impact to revenue of fair value adjustments to deferred revenue due to acquisitions and (v) other acquisition related costs. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP results is included in the financial statements accompanying this press release.

Cash: Cash used in operations was $4.4 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012, and cash and cash equivalents at November 30, 2011 were $15.0 million. Saba typically uses cash in the first half of the fiscal year and generates positive cash flow in the second half of the fiscal year due to strong subscription renewals in the third and fourth quarters.

Key Business Highlights: Saba added 29 new enterprise customers in the quarter including Vodafone, Royal Dutch Shell, ANZ Bank, Weight Watchers, and National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

During the quarter, Saba established a strategic partnership with Workday where Saba People Cloud solutions will be tightly integrated with Workday HCM. Saba also formed a cross-selling relationship with Kronos. Saba’s industry-leading learning and talent management solutions will be combined with Kronos® recruiting and workforce management suite to offer an end-to-end solution to support the entire hourly employee life cycle.

Business Outlook

The following statements are based on current expectations as of the date of this release. These statements are forward-looking, and actual results may differ materially. Saba does not undertake any obligations to update these forward-looking statements.

For fiscal year 2012, ending May 31, 2012, Saba reiterates its forecast of total GAAP revenues to be in the range of $130 million to $133 million and total billings to grow in the range of 16% to 18% in fiscal year 2012 over fiscal year 2011.

Since the Company has successfully transformed to a cloud business, Saba is introducing guidance for cloud billings for fiscal year 2012. Management believes this key metric better reflects the core growth of the company. Saba forecasts cloud billings to grow in excess of 60% in fiscal year 2012 over fiscal year 2011.

The Company also reiterates its forecast for GAAP net loss to range from $0.39 to $0.45 per share and non-GAAP net loss to range from $0.17 to $0.23 per share. Saba also confirms that it expects to return to non-GAAP profitability in the second half of fiscal year 2012.

Workday Introduces Newest Update: Workday 13…from Workday

April 27, 2011

Delivers New Functionality Across Human Capital Management, Payroll, Initiatives, Financial Management, and Spend Management Solutions

If you are looking for a new Talent Management System, or any HR system, don’t rely solely on “recommendations” or published reports. Do yourself a huge favor and talk to HRchitect first. After 14 years, HRchitect has unparalleled knowledge of the HR and Talent Management vendor community and can save you time and money in selection and implementation. Simply put, do not invest in any kind of HR technology without consulting with the experts first. HRchitect is always available to help!

Workday, Inc., the leader in SaaS-based enterprise solutions for global human resources (HR), payroll, and financial management, today introduces its current update: Workday 13.

Three times per year, Workday releases feature-packed updates to its Human Capital Management (HCM), Payroll, Initiatives, Financial Management, and Spend Management solutions. Unlike traditional on-premise software that requires costly and time-consuming upgrades every 3 to 5 years, Workday’s multi-tenant architecture allows customers to move to new updates in just a few days — at no additional cost — as part of their regular subscription fees. As of today, all live Workday customers are running Workday 13.

What’s New

  • Workday HCM. Workday HCM is a unified solution that includes global human resources management and talent management capabilities.

    • HR functionality introduced in Workday 13 allows customers to quickly respond to new U.S. healthcare regulations and global personnel data changes. Workday also delivers best-in-class position budgeting, providing visibility into and understanding of workforce cost and capacity. This update also allows HR practitioners and managers to leverage market salary data for benchmarking, fair worker compensation, and manager decision support.
    • Workday continues to extend its talent management footprint with the delivery of cascading goals, multi-rater feedback, competency management and talent analytics, and interactive and configurable talent matrix (or “n-Box”) reports. These capabilities enable organizations to efficiently support a talent-driven, high-performance organization without the additional cost or complexity of bolt-on talent systems.

  • Workday Payroll. With this update, Workday introduces a partnership with OneSource VHR to provide payroll co-sourcing services, including payroll settlement, tax administration, and garnishments administration.

  • Workday Initiatives. Introduced late last year, Workday Initiatives can now track non-project work activities such as product research and development, marketing campaigns, grant programs, and even standard job functions. Users can track work efforts and costs by percentage of time or hours worked. Users can also link work to employee or organization goals, initiatives, and performance results. This helps organizations track the true cost of any type of work and make better choices about how to allocate their workforce and non-people resources.

  • Workday Financial Management and Spend Management. With continued focus on built-in governance and control, Workday 13 delivers expanded audit and control capabilities around spend processes. This update also includes multi-book, a foundation that allows users to produce both GAAP- and IFRS-based reports from a single system, as well as real-time cash management and forecasting.

  • Workday User Experience. Workday is always taking cues from consumer Web constructs in order to enhance its overall user experience. The current version of Workday provides several new features, including Workfeed, a real-time activity stream that provides personal notifications and enables users to respond to alerts, process requests, and tasks. Also added is the Workbench, an easy-to-use homepage for system administrators that provides intuitive access to administrative activities such as the configuration of business processes, security policies, and reports.

  • Workday Mobility. With this update, Workday releases Workday for iPad® in limited availability. Workday for iPad is a native application that will allow executives to easily browse organizations, view talent profiles, monitor their personal Workfeed, and gain insight into workforce and financial analytics. General availability is planned for Workday 14.

  • Workday Usage Insight. For the first time, Workday delivers Workday Insight, an opt-in feature that provides a report of key metrics that detail the depth and breadth of a customer’s application usage.

Comments on the News
“Workday embraces the cloud model, which means we innovate at the pace of the Web, not at the pace of the enterprise,” said Aneel Bhusri, Workday co-founder and CEO. “All features and functionality delivered as part of our regular updates are available to our customers at no additional cost. As of today, all live customers are running the newest — and only — version of Workday. We continue to be excited about the pace at which we can deliver innovation to our customers and by the overall momentum of cloud adoption in the enterprise.”

  • Custom analytics now allow managers and business analysts to create live, drillable charts and tables of important information for managing their day-to-day business. For example, a manager could track performance reviews in a given region across multiple dimensions, monitoring anything from completion rates to unusual trends in ratings based on jobs, organizations or even management level.
  • Custom charts can then be turned into Worklets – small, configurable windows on the individual’s own Workday page – and shared with other users, while always maintaining role-based data security.
  • Business process analytics enable managers and HR professionals to track the effectiveness of processes automated within Workday, giving them the ability to view key statistics such as time to complete a given process as well as overcome individual or organizational bottlenecks.

In addition, Workday 10 includes hundreds of new capabilities for employees, managers and HR professionals. Examples include:

  • Retiree access, providing former employees ongoing access to a limited set of benefits and administrative information, as well as the ability to keep their personal data current.
  • Total compensation gives employees a complete view of all forms of compensation such as salary, bonus, one-time payments, equity and benefits.

Workday Delivers Pay for Performance and Worker Spend Management…from Workday

December 16, 2008

Manager- and Employee-Centered Applications to Build Performance and Optimize Workforce Spending

HRchitect includes Workday in our list of top Talent HRIS vendors that businesses should consider.

Workday, Inc., the leader in on-demand enterprise solutions for human resources and business management, today announced two major new capabilities: Pay for Performance and Worker Spend Management. The new services, included in Workday Update 6, continue to extend Workday’s global system-of-record for Human Capital Management (HCM), providing a master data repository for organizations’ people, compensation, worker costs and business results. The company also announced its U.S. Payroll solution is now generally available.

Workday Company Update

  • Workday continues to grow, with 68 customers spanning mid-sized businesses to the Fortune 500. Close to 40 are in production, and all Workday customers are using the latest update.
  • Workday now has more than 320 employees and recently opened a new headquarters facility in Pleasanton, Calif. to accommodate long-term growth.
  • A recent Gartner Survey showed Software-as-a-Service solutions continue to grow as an alternative to aging on-premise systems, with 9 out of 10 respondents indicating plans to maintain or grow their use of SaaS solutions. Key drivers cited included the lower total cost of ownership of SaaS and unmet performance expectations with on-premise solutions.

New in Workday Update 6

  • Workday continues to expand its HCM system-of-record to provide vital worker information to the business: who works here, what is the cost and what is the business impact?
    Specifically:

    • Providing a global system-of-record (master data repository) for organization, worker and compensation information,
    • Capturing and managing the spend on, by and for workers and
    • Linking business results and costs back to worker activity and performance.

Workday is delivering two new services with Update 6: Worker Spend Management and Pay for Performance. These capabilities support the day-to-day activities of the manager and employee, placing the focus on business results while effectively capturing the information required to support HR operational needs.

  • Worker Spend Management: Expenses, Procurement and Resource Management have historically been financial functions aimed at tracking and controlling enterprise spending. Tying spending activity and behavior to individual positions, people, workgroups, teams and business purpose has been impossible without expensive analytic solutions or manual spreadsheets. Workday’s system-of-record means spending activity is automatically tied to workers and can be linked to projects or activities via Worktags, so managers and business leaders have a complete view of total worker cost including both compensation and the resources used to get work done.
  • Pay for Performance: Traditional Talent Management offerings have evolved as add-ons to legacy HRMS systems, creating new silos of information and an incomplete view of worker performance. Workday ties performance reviews, team performance and company performance to compensation, providing managers with recommended targets based on a broad range of configurable variables and business results. Decision and assessment support includes target vs. actual reporting and actionable analytics, enabling organizations and managers to achieve true performance-based rewards.

Workday Payroll for the U.S. is generally available with Update 6. First customers will be going live on Payroll in January 2009.

  • Workday Payroll delivers complete payroll processing coupled with Workday’s Human Capital Management and Financial Management solutions. Built on an entirely new model, the system leverages a global calculation engine and payroll framework, allowing Workday to localize payroll for regions and countries without the expensive redevelopment efforts associated with traditional on-premise systems. Workday also delivers packaged integrations to outsourced payroll providers.

Also included in Workday’s Update 6 is a significant expansion of the Workday Benefits Network, a set of pre-packaged integrations with popular benefits carriers. The Benefits Network now includes connections to 49 providers, with plans for 21 more by the end of this month.

Workday is now translated for 4 countries. Localization of HR personal information for close to 50 countries will be available in Workday Update 7 in Q1 2009.
